Citrix Receiver Slow

Our issue is mostly not around logon times of Windows as we have optimized it. Where we find it slow is Citrix Receiver itself. It takes 5 seconds from when you click a published app/desktop icon to it actually launching. I can’t seem to find anything on optimizing Citrix receiver and reducing the actual launch time. The easiest way to do this is to use the Citrix Web Interface and log on as a user that's experiencing slow logons. To do this, first get a stopwatch and time the entire logon process-from the moment you click an application icon in Web Interface until the moment the desktop shell or application is fully loaded.

“Citrix is slow” is one of the most common complaints Citrix admins hear daily. Whether it is specific to slow logon times or poor session performance, Citrix admins often spend more than half of their day trying to find the root cause of these complaints and quickly remediate – even when Citrix itself isn’t the root cause of the issue.

The complexity of finding root cause isn’t within Citrix itself, but rather the supporting IT elements that surround the Citrix farm and the lack of visibility that most IT professionals have into that environment. Free tools, like Citrix Director, do not provide visibility into early stages of the logon, app availability, backend systems (Active Directory, Profile Servers, Licensing Servers), virtual servers, user devices, printers, or storage. And if you are in healthcare, the complexity only increases when you add in your EHR systems (Cerner, Epic, MEDITECH, Allscripts) and do not have the data to identify if the root cause of poor performance is with the EHR system or the infrastructure supporting it.

In order to make troubleshooting “Citrix is Slow” easy, IT professionals need purpose-built tools that leverage embedded intelligence and automation to anticipate, troubleshoot, and prevent end-user experience issues regardless of where IT workloads or users are located.

Troubleshooting Requires Visibility

Goliath provides complete end-to-end visibility into the underlying virtualization delivery infrastructure, including specific details on the end user – all from a central console. This enables IT administrators to quickly pinpoint true root cause for troubleshooting and reach resolution from an integrated view of the entire virtualization delivery infrastructure – not just one element of it. If you’ve ever been frustrated by the length of time it takes to get past the initial pre-logon screen on Citrix Web Interface or Storefront then a simple change can rectify this issue.

Quite often the issue is caused by the web interface or storefront server making a ssl crl certificate check to Verisign and if the web interface does not have access to the internet this process will time out. Now whilst its important to allow web based apps and sites to perform crl checking for financial sites or sites that hold personal data its not really necessary. In order to disable crl checking you need to edit a single file and add a single line of code.

Firstly you need to check which version of ASP your Storefront or Web Interface is using. You can do this by opening the IIS management console and clicking on the application pools. You then right click on the relevent application and basic settings.

Once you know the version delve into c:windowsmicrosoft .net/framework%versionnumber%.

Then edit the aspnet.config and add the line <generatePublisherEvidence enabled=”false” /> so that the config file looks like this.

Also change the same asp net.config in the c:windowsmicrosoft .netframework64%versionnumber%
